It was circa 2014 when I first watched Kill Your Darlings (one of my favourite movies to this day) and learned about dark academia aesthetics. All of a sudden, all the things that made my then-15-year-old heart thick (candles dripping with wax, witchy, apothecary vibes, old books and bookstores, itchy sweaters etc.), had a common denominator. This love has stayed with me to this day, and it experiences it's renaissance every year when first signs of autumn starts to show. And this year is no different. But, before we proceed, here's what dark academia is according to wikipedia:
an aesthetic centered on higher education, writing, the arts, and classic Greek and Gothic architecture (...)
Sounds pretentious and I guess that's the point partially, but I like to sort of harness this image by incorporating subtle bits to everyday life instead of going too ott:
black notebooks with cream colored pages. firewood scented candles. all black outfits. oxfords and dark chunky knits. retro bikes. autumn evenings spent at cafes. museum dates.
